Having a beautiful smile may be even easier than you think. Many people achieve the look they’ve been dreaming of with our simple bleaching procedure. There are two methods to choose from:
If you prefer teeth that are immediately whiter, our In-Office Whitening System uses proprietary technology to significantly whiten your teeth in a little over an hour. It’s ideal for anyone wanting immediate results. In addition, you will be provided with a set of custom trays for any future touch ups required to maintain the brightness achieved by the In-Office Whitening.
We provide you with a special bleaching agent that you put into clear plastic trays. These trays are custom fit in our office to ensure the bleaching agent contacts enamel only. The At-Home system is completed in the convenience of your own home over a series of applications. The optimum results can often be achieved by wearing the trays for 30 minutes, twice a day, over a two week period. The trays should be kept for future touch ups to maintain the brightness achieved with the At-Home system.
Teeth whitening or bleaching is a process using a concentrated percentage of hydrogen peroxide or its derivative carbamide peroxide, that is suspended in gel that lightens discoloured enamel.
There are many causes. The most common include aging and consumption of staining substances such as coffee, tea or tobacco. During tooth formation, certain antibiotics or excessive ingestion of fluoride may also cause tooth discoloration. Some teeth may be incapable of becoming whiter or lighter due to existing developmental and environmental conditions. Therefore, prior to any whitening procedure, a thorough examination will be performed to determine the proper course of treatment.
Yes. By removing any existing stains, plaque, and tartar from the teeth, the whitening material is significantly more effective. In some instances, the bacterial colonization attached to the teeth may actually neutralize the whitening gel, causing it to be ineffective.
Just about anyone can benefit from teeth whitening. However, treatment may not be as effective for some as it is for others. Upon an oral exam, our office can determine if you are a candidate for this procedure.
Yes, research and clinical studies have indicated that whitening teeth under the supervision of a dentist is safe. In fact, most dentists consider whitening the safest cosmetic dental procedure available. As with any teeth whitening product, it is not recommended for children under 13 years of age and pregnant or lactating women.
Yes, you can expect your teeth to maintain the lighter color by following simple post whitening instructions. We recommend brushing twice a day, along with flossing and rinsing daily. Occasionally, a touch-up once a year using the At-Home system may be needed to maintain the brightness of the new shade.
Yes. Consulting our office is always the first step to whitening your teeth safely. Over-the-counter tooth whitening strips, brush-on gels and toothpastes tend to be less effective than professional whiteners. We see this for two reasons. Firstly, the strength of the bleach utilized in over-the-counter products is much less than that available from a professional. Secondly, the custom fit tray/splint fabricated in a dental office keeps the bleaching agent in contact with the teeth more readily than over-the counter products. This ensures the efficient use of the material, as well as protecting the surrounding tissues from being damaged by the bleaching agent.
Most patients report little or no sensitivity, yet some patients experience temporary increased tooth sensitivity while whitening. These symptoms are well controlled with professional products, as they incorporate desensitizers into the bleaching gel. As an adjunct, desensitizing toothpastes, fluoridated mouthwashes, and over-the-counter analgesics such as Tylenol or Advil will help to alleviate any sensitivity. These symptoms will completely resolve themselves after interruption or completion of the treatment.
