Fillings

A dental filling is a restorative material used to restore the function, integrity and morphology of missing tooth structure. The structural loss typically results from decay or trauma. Dental restorations may be fabricated out of a variety of materials such as tooth colored composite resin (see below for direct vs. indirect), amalgam (silver filling), gold or porcelain (see inlays/onlays and crowns).

Replacing Silver Fillings with a Tooth Colored Restoration

Depending on the size of your silver fillings, you can have them replaced with tooth colored restorations that are direct or indirect. White fillings can be placed directly in the mouth at one appointment. For those fillings that are larger, an indirect restoration is recommended (see inlays/onlays). The indirect fillings are made of porcelain or a processed composite resin at the lab. This process requires two appointments. Your teeth are restored to a natural look and feel, they are stronger and the remaining tooth structure is protected!

Advantages of tooth colored restorations

Enamel and dentin bonding procedures allow for a more conservative tooth reduction compared to silver fillings. The bonding creates a tight, superior fit to the natural tooth.

Tooth colored restorations are more pleasing to the eye than silver restorations.

We know that by design silver fillings ultimately result in a weaker tooth structure, whereas tooth colored restorations add strength to weakened teeth.

Some tooth-colored restorations contain fluoride which can help prevent decay.
