After Cosmetic Reconstruction

When an anaesthetic has been used, your lips and tongue may be numb for several hours after the appointment. Avoid any chewing and hot beverages until the numbness has completely worn off. It is very easy to bite or burn your tongue or lips while you are numb.

Remember that it will take time to adjust to the feel of your new bite. When the bite is altered or the position of the teeth is changed, it takes several days for the brain to recognize the new position of your teeth or their thickness. If you continue to detect any high spots or problems with your bite, call our office so we can schedule an adjustment appointment.

It is normal to experience some hot and cold sensitivity. The teeth require some time to heal after removal of tooth structure and will be sensitive in the interim. Your gums may also be sore for a few days. Warm salt water rinses (one teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) several times a day can help reduce pain and swelling. A mild pain medication (acetaminophen or ibuprofen) should ease any residual discomfort.

Daily brushing and flossing are a must for your new dental work. Daily plaque removal is critical for the long-term success of your new teeth, as are regular cleaning appointments.

Any food that can crack, chip, or damage a natural tooth can do the same to your new teeth. Avoid hard foods and substances such as beer nuts, peanut brittle, ice, fingernails, pencils, and sticky candies.

If you engage in sports, let us know so we can make you a custom mouthguard. If you grind your teeth at night, we will fabricate a nightguard for you to wear to protect your teeth and dental work.

Adjusting to the look and feel of your new smile will take time. If you have any problems or concerns, please call the office at 519-474-2626. We always welcome your questions.

After Crown & Bridge Appointments

Crowns and bridges usually take two appointments to complete. In the first visit, the teeth are prepared and impressions of the mouth are taken. Temporary crowns or bridges are placed to protect the teeth while the custom restoration is being made. Since the teeth will be anesthetized, the tongue, lips, and roof of the mouth may be numb. Please refrain from eating and drinking hot beverages until the numbness has completely worn off.

Occasionally a temporary crown may come off. Call us if this happens and bring the temporary crown with you so we can re-cement it. It is very important for the temporary to stay in place, as it will prevent other teeth from moving and compromising the fit of your final restoration.

To keep your temporaries in place, avoid eating hard and sticky foods, chewing gum, and if possible, chew on the opposite side of your mouth. It is important to brush normally, but floss carefully. Pull the floss out from the side of the temporary crown rather than pulling out through the contact, as this may dislodge the temporary.

It is normal to experience some temperature sensitivity after each appointment. The sensitivity should subside a few weeks after the placement of the final restoration. Mild pain medications may also be used as directed by our office.

If your bite feels uneven, if you have persistent pain, or if you have any other questions or concerns, please call our office at 519-474-2626.

After Tooth Extraction

When an anaesthetic has been used, your lips and tongue may be numb for several hours after the appointment. Avoid any chewing and hot beverages until the numbness has completely worn off. It is very easy to bite or burn your tongue or lips while you are numb.

It is important for a blood clot to form to stop the bleeding and begin the healing process. That is why we ask you to bite on gauze for 20 minutes after the appointment. If the bleeding persists, place gauze over the wound and bite firmly for 45 minutes. You may have to do this several times.

Once the bleeding stops, it is important not to disturb or dislodge the clot, as it aids in the healing process. Do not rinse, suck on a straw, smoke, drink alcohol, vigorously exercise or brush teeth next to the extraction site for 24 hours. These activities will dislodge or dissolve the clot, which slows healing.

Apply an ice pack over the treated area for 10 minutes on / 20 minutes off for the first 4-6 hours. This will aid in controlling the swelling and discomfort. The swelling usually subsides after 48 hours.

After 24 hours, gently rinse with warm salt water several times a day, especially after meals. As well, you can resume your normal dental hygiene routine. This will speed healing and keep your mouth fresh and clean.

To control the discomfort, use ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) as directed. If antibiotics are prescribed, continue to take them for the indicated length of time, even if signs and symptoms of infection are gone.

It is important to drink a lot of fluid and eat nutritious soft food on the day of the extraction. You can eat normally as soon as you are comfortable.

If you have any concerns please call the office at 519-474-2626.

After White Fillings

When an anaesthetic has been used, your lips and tongue may be numb for several hours after the appointment. Avoid any chewing and hot beverages until the numbness has completely worn off. It is very easy to bite or burn your tongue or lips while you are numb. You may chew with your new white fillings as soon as the anaesthetic has worn off since they are fully set when you leave the office.

It is normal to experience some hot and cold sensitivity after your appointment. Injection sites may also be sore. Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) work well to alleviate the tenderness.

If your bite feels uneven, your discomfort persists, or if you have any other concerns, please call our office at 519-474-2626.

After a Root Canal

When an anaesthetic has been used, your lips and tongue may be numb for several hours after the appointment. Avoid any chewing and hot beverages until the numbness has completely worn off. It is very easy to bite or burn your tongue or lips while you are numb.

Commonly, the amount of discomfort a patient feels after a root canal is directly related to the amount of discomfort and infection present prior to the start of treatment.

If an antibiotic was prescribed, it is important to finish all the medication whether the discomfort has resolved or not.

The best way to control discomfort is to alternate between ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and acetaminophen (Tylenol) every two hours, while not exceeding the maximum limits in a 24 hour period of either medication. If tenderness to biting is not resolved or persists past 7 days, please contact the office at 519-474-2626.

After an Implant Placement

When an anaesthetic has been used, your lips and tongue may be numb for several hours after the appointment. Avoid any chewing and hot beverages until the numbness has completely worn off. It is very easy to bite or burn your tongue or lips while you are numb.

Do not touch or disturb the area where the work was done with your tongue, fingers or sharp instruments (i.e. eating utensils). This may result in irritation, infection or bleeding.

Some bleeding after a surgical procedure is normal. It is important for a blood clot to form to stop the bleeding and begin the healing process. That’s why we ask you to bite on gauze for 20 minutes after the appointment. If the bleeding persists, place gauze over the surgical site and bite firmly for 45 minutes. Repeat as necessary.

For the first 24 hours do not rinse, suck on a straw, smoke, drink alcohol, vigorously exercise, or brush the teeth next to the surgical site. After 24 hours, gently rinse with warm salt water several times a day, especially after meals. As well, you can resume your normal dental hygiene routine. This will speed healing and keep your mouth fresh and clean.

To prevent swelling, apply an ice pack over the treated area for 10 minutes on / 20 minutes off for the first 4-6 hours.

Some discomfort is normal after the surgery. Analgesic medications should be taken only as prescribed.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact the office at 519-474-2626.
