Bad Breath

Bad breath, also known medically as halitosis, is a common problem for patients. What causes it?

• Lack of Saliva
• Food Odour
• Skipping Meals
• Poor Dental Hygiene
• Gum Disease
• Medical Conditions
• Smoking
• Drinking Alcohol, Coffee and Tea

Dental Hygiene

Dental hygiene is important because your oral health can affect your overall health. Periodontal disease (gum disease) has been directly linked to other health concerns, such as heart disease.

The good news is that periodontal disease is preventable and treatable! If caught early, it can be reversed. Good oral hygiene can help prevent gum disease, but regular dental check-ups are essential to early detection, especially in those with a family history of the disease.

Fillings are used to fix broken teeth, to fill a cavity, or to replace old fillings that might be damaged or need repair. We will first remove all of the decay from the tooth and then place the filling to prevent further infection or decay. At Spencer Dentistry, we recommend the use of tooth colored composite fillings but they may also be fabricated out of amalgam (silver filling), gold or porcelain.

Gum Therapy

Practicing good oral hygiene at home, in combination with regular visits to the dentist, can help you avoid gum disease.

Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in Canadian adults. However, most cases of gum disease are actually preventable. Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, results from a bacterial infection in your gums. It affects the gum tissue surrounding your teeth.

We use soft tissue management to help you prevent issues and maintain your oral health. During your routine check-up, your dental hygienist will check for signs of gum disease. Our team will then develop a personalized treatment plan based on your current status.

Root Canal Therapy

Our dentists may recommend root canal therapy for patients who have developed an inner soft-tissue infection. At the center of your tooth is the pulp. Pulp is a collection of nerve tissue, blood vessels and other cells that help to build the surrounding tooth. Infection of the pulp can be caused by trauma to the tooth, deep decay, cracks and chips, or repeated dental procedures. Symptoms of the infection can be identified as visible injury or swelling of the tooth, sensitivity to temperature which leads to a toothache, or constant pain in the tooth and gums.

Since this type of infection cannot clear up on its own, a root canal might be necessary. Dr. Spencer will evaluate your oral health and in order to help prevent infections from worsening, root canals may be recommended.
