Nitrous Oxide Sedation Dentistry

Talk to Your Dentist if You Have Dental Anxiety
Nitrous Oxide is a gas that is colourless, odourless, and works to make you feel comfortable during your dental appointment.
What is Dental Anxiety?
Dental anxiety is fear or anxiousness experienced before or during dental appointments. This anxiety can be triggered by a fear of pain, needles, or the sound and smell of dental equipment. It can also potentially lead to avoidance of dental treatment, which can have a negative impact on oral health. Many people experience dental anxiety or fear when it comes to visiting the dentist. It’s important to speak to our dental team prior to treatment so we can discuss if nitrous oxide is right for you. Nitrous oxide, also referred to as laughing gas, is a safe and effective dental anesthetic that can ease your anxiety during dental treatment.
How Laughing Gas Works
Laughing gas works by affecting the neurotransmitters in the brain. When inhaled, it enters the bloodstream and acts as a central nervous system depressant, leading to a feeling of relaxation and euphoria. The gas inhibits certain signals in the brain, especially those that are related to fear and anxiety, making it a common choice for sedation during dental procedures. The effects of laughing gas are quick to kick in and wear off, making it a convenient and safe option for those driving themselves to and from dental appointments.

The Administration of Nitrous Oxide

There are various dental sedation options, including oral sedation. This option can sometimes make patients feel even more anxious which is why our dental office offers an easy-to-apply conscious sedation option.

Mask Administration

Nitrous oxide is administered through a mask. Once turned on, you'll be asked to inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth to receive the gas. It will take approximately 20 seconds to feel its effects.

You'll Still Be Conscious

Nitrous oxide does not put you to sleep. You will still be able to speak to us, answer questions, and let us know if you're comfortable or require more gas.

It Can Ease Pain and Anxiety

While nitrous oxide is commonly used as an anxiety reliever, it is also a non-invasive way to ease pain, especially if you have a fear of needles. It does not take the pain away, however, it can lessen the effects.

No Lingering Effects

Nitrous oxide's effects dissipate rapidly, often within minutes after inhalation ceases, allowing patients to return to their normal activities almost immediately without lingering impairment.

Choose Nitrous Oxide as a Way to Ease Pain and Anxiety During Dental Procedures

Tell your dentist if you have dental anxiety. Regardless of the procedure or treatment you come to our office for, we can use nitrous oxide as a way to make you more comfortable.

Dental Cleanings

This sedation method can be used if you are anxious about regularly scheduled dental cleanings. You shouldn't let your fear of the dentist stop you from having your teeth cleaned at least twice a year.

Cosmetic Dentistry

If you have dental anxiety, you may feel like you'll never be able to undergo cosmetic procedures to improve your smile, but we can help you realize this isn't true.

Dental Filling

If you have a cavity, you shouldn't wait to visit us. It should be dealt with promptly. We can save your tooth and ensure you are as comfortable as possible throughout the procedure since you'll still be awake and able to answer our questions.

Root Canal Therapy

Patients often see root canals as intimidating, but this isn't the case. The use of nitrous oxide and local dental anesthesia can make the procedure painless and less intimidating!

Tooth Extraction

A general tooth extraction can be done with local anesthesia and nitrous oxide. Inhaled nitrous oxide will provide relief quickly so we'll be able to administer anesthesia and get right to the procedure. Our dental team will also speak to you throughout the procedure so you can stay updated on the progress.

Nitrous Oxide for Kids
Laughing gas is a safe and effective mild sedative option for managing anxiety and pain in pediatric patients as well. This mild sedative is commonly used in dental offices to help children feel at ease during procedures. It is well-tolerated by most children and has a rapid recovery time, allowing them to resume normal activities shortly after the procedure. Just like in adults, laughing gas will still allow your children to be aware of what’s around them but may make them feel giddy and calm. They’ll be closely monitored by our team throughout the procedure. Once it’s over and the laughing gas mask is removed, they’ll feel back to normal in no time. Just note that it is also normal for children (and adults) to potentially feel nauseous afterwards, but this feeling won’t last long.
